MTV gears up for gay channel Outlet
Thursday, February 12, 2004
Variety reports that MTV is moving on with plans to create Outlet, a 24-hour gay and lesbian cable network, following positive talks with leading cable TV operators. While original plans for Outlet saw the channel as a pay channel that MTV would develop with Showtime, the current plan is for MTV to go it alone and make it a basic, advertiser-supported digital cable channel. That change means Outlet's content will have to be more mainstream-friendly, but the channel would likely be offered to cable outlets as part of a package with MTV, VH1, and Nickelodeon. There is still no word regarding a launch date, although MTV is eyeing the competition from PrideVision TV, a pay channel based in Canada that has already secured commitments from several Time Warner cable systems. (No word regarding a launch date for PrideVision TV in the U.S. either, for that matter.)
