Intel litigated and won big time.

Corrected.

The arbitrator ruled that AMD did not have a "second source" right to the 386 design.

AMD did introduce an illegal transistor-for-transistor copy of the 386, that violated Intel's copyright on ICE microcode. For good measure, AMD also introduced an illegal copy of the 486.
