The Word has gone out to the surfing world.
There are 50-foot waves at the coast today, which means that the Men Who Ride Mountains surfing contest is on for tomorrow at Mavericks, the most famous big-wave surf spot in the world. Every winter they hope for just the right conditions -- waves, wind, tides -- to come together and produce perfectly formed waves the size of six-story buildings. (Some years it never happens.) There are maybe 30 people on earth who are good enough to ride these waves and live, and they watch online for updates from Jeff Clark, the guy who named Mavericks and first surfed it 20 years ago.
Clark put out the word this morning that conditions should be perfect tomorrow, and surfers in Australia, Hawaii, South Africa and everywhere else are right now throwing things in suitcases and sprinting for the airport.
Should be an incredible show.
