SourceGas LLC said Wednesday it is purchasing the Arkansas Western Gas Co. for about $224 million.

Arkansas Western, a subsidiary of Southwestern Energy Co., serves about 151,000 natural-gas customers in northern Arkansas. The company, founded in Fayetteville in 1929, employs about 375 people and serves residential, commercial and industrial customers.

SourceGas, based in Lakewood, Colo., provides service to nearly 266,000 customers in Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming and Hermosillo, Mexico. The acquisition will increase SourceGas’ customer base by more than 55 percent
