I'd be surprised if they had more than a T1 coming into it. But they may have had more or a bigger circuit depending on the call center folks answering calls.
Most of these systems are the comm lines/trunk a few cards, back-plane, hard drive for VM, digital phones and the rest is solid state.
If you have the right UPS system and backup generator (meaning they are running clean power all the time) and good auto fail-over power switches you should almost NEVER have an issue with your phone system.
