Intel has absolutely no scalability for Xeon in FP.

On the other hand, IPF more than makes up for it:

- SGI SGI Altix 350 (1000MHz, Itanium 2) 4 54.7 55.0 (4-way)

These are LV Itanium 2 CPUs (1.0GHz, 55W TDP).

AMD's highest performing 2-way:

AMD's highest performing 4-way:

- Advanced Micro Devices 4144H (848) 4 46.9 52.5

SGI's result with 1.4GHz Itanium 2 with 1.5M L3 cache:

If I were buying a CAD/CAE/CAM workstation for performance, Opteron would not be inside.
