I can remember when "gay" just meant happy and carefree...with no sexual connotations.

The US slang for a homosexual used to be "fag" - in the UK a slang word for cigarette, or a public schoolboy who acted as a servant for a senior, or "faggot" which again, in the UK meant either a foodstuff of a piece of kindling for a fire.

Life was simpler then....
