Rocky star Sylvester Stallone is reportedly in talks to step into Charles Bronson's shoes in a remake of 1974 revenge flick Death Wish.

According to Variety, the Rambo actor is in talks to direct and star as an ordinary man driven to vengeance when his wife and daughter are attacked.

Stallone saw a career resurgence with last year's Rocky Balboa, which grossed $150 million (£72 million) worldwide and is set to revisit another of his classic characters in the upcoming John Rambo (though the movie's name has changed several times).

MGM told the trade newspaper that a remake of Michael Winner's vigilante movie adhered to their long-term growth strategy.

"We are looking at our library to determine which potential franchise properties make the most sense for us to produce, and Death Wish was clearly one that jumped out," said MGM chief operating officer Rick Sands.

"We hope to get a deal done with Sylvester Stallone to direct and star, and like the Rocky and Rambo films, we see this as another potential franchise for him."

Terminator 3 writers Michael Ferris and John Brancato are likely to script the Death Wish remake, though the production schedule depends on the duration of the Hollywood writers' strike.End of story
