[bIf you're looking for buried indie cinematic riches, keep on digging. The clunky "King of California" leaves you with all the satisfaction of hitting caliche in your backyard.
Writer/director Mike Cahill's debut is a zany father/daughter bonding comedy with flashes of brilliance that turn out to be fool's gold. It twists the "Freaky Friday" concept of reversed responsibility roles between a parent and child along with a "Da Vinci Code"-like treasure hunt. The plot is ridiculously outlandish rather than whimsically fascinating, and the characters are too inflexible to convince you they're real people.[b Uncle Joey and Danny Tanner on the sitcom "Full House" had more depth.
