No need to guess, and while your guess certainly puts the best spin on it, it is not based in any reality. Just call IR and ask them why they did it. They will tell you they did it because they "felt it was the right thing to do for investors that stood by them when they needed them", for whatever that means. Sounds pretty silly to me.
