COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho, Feb 19, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Sterling Mining Company (SRLM, Trade) is pleased to announce the hiring of former Sunshine Mine Manager and Chief Engineer Mike McLean. Sterling assumed control of the peerless Sunshine Mine in June 2003 and began assembling a hand-picked team of highly-qualified and experienced professionals with the stated intention of returning the mine to full-scale production.

Mr. McLean was Chief Mining Engineer and Mine Manager of the Sunshine Mine for its former operator from the mid-1990s through its closure in 2001. Under his tenure, the Sunshine achieved the highest production figures at the lowest operating costs seen at the mine in a quarter-century. He brings to Sterling extensive experience in mine management, engineering, safety, environmental compliance, start-up, development, and production issues, along with vast knowledge specific to the Sunshine Mine.

In the final years of Sunshine operations, Mr. McLean was instrumental in designing and leading implementation of the CSR (ConSil Ramp) Project, which was intended to significantly increase mine capacity and throughput. The development was never completed due to the financial difficulties of the former operator. Mr. McLean's responsibilities as Project Engineer at Sterling will include a major role in updating the mine plan with a focus on the incorporation of the CSR.

Prior to managing the Sunshine Mine, Mr. McLean managed the Mineral Hill Mine in Montana for Inco U.S. He holds a B.Sc. in Mining Engineering from the University of Nevada at Reno.

Sterling President Ray De Motte stated, "Mike is the latest in a series of top-notch professionals retained by Sterling to assist with the preliminary studies necessary to move the Sunshine toward renewed production. The tremendous experience and resources that Mike brings to our team are invaluable and we are very fortunate to have him onboard."
