what usually happen is, MMs accumulate shares, they too buy low and sell high like us, and they also control the bid/ask. So, after driving price down, and buying up shares from people who are selling, they then set up for a run. They trade shares between MMs to create volume, narrow the bid/ask to attract daytraders, then they'll move the bid/ask rapidly with volume. They sell off all the shares that were accumulated at lows, and the run ends, with PPS drops from emotion peak, and MMs accumulate again.

as simple and manipulative as that. thats why you gotta follow what the MMs are doing all the time.
