TOC, , ) third-quarter net income jumped to $2.97 billion, or $4.61 a share, from $418 million, or 65 cents a share, a year earlier, due mostly to the gain from the July sale of Thomson Learning's higher education, careers and library reference assets. Adjusted for the discontinued operations plus costs related to the Reuters Group PLC (RTRSY) deal and tax benefits, earnings were $310 million, or 48 cents a share, compared to $199 million, or 31 cents, in the 2006 quarter. Earnings included $2.7 billion related to discontinued operations, net of tax. Operating profit declined 1% to $312 million due to expenses related to the Reuters acquisition. The Stamford, Conn., financial data provider said revenue rose 11% to $1.8 billion from $1.62 billion a year ago On average, analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected earnings of 43 cents a share and revenue of $1.76 billion.
