God Will Not Fail

Karen Dockrey

Trust God? How can I trust someone whom I can't even see? Especially when the ones whom I can see have betrayed me.

Asking these questions shows how smart you are. Trust is tough stuff. And important stuff. So the way you grow trust matters a lot.

You know that you can't trust just anyone. You know that if it's hard to trust a person, it must be even harder to trust almighty God.

Isn't that right? Yes and no.

Yes, it's tremendously difficult to trust someone you can't see. But no, trusting God can be much easier than trusting a person.

God won't treat you the way people do. God is bigger than pride, bigger than ego, bigger than power. He has no need to abuse your trust or betray you.

In fact, to build trust upon trust, God has taken the first steps -- He created you and came to earth in the Person of Jesus Christ to show you what He's like.

God knows that:
1. when you trust Him, you'll believe that He does want joy for you;
2. when you trust Him, you'll believe how valuable you are;
3. when you trust how much He values you, you'll want to make good choices, build good relationships, choose good ways to spend your days;
4. when you want the best, you'll go to God who knows how to build the best.

Now you can take the next step—invite God to show you how to trust Him.

Then you'll want to obey God because you can trust him, not because you're afraid He'll get you if you don't. Trusting God is more like a journey than an instant arrival. Each time that you trust Him and see that He really is who He says He is, you'll find it easier to trust Him again.

Let these rhyming words help to show you how to develop your trust in God: need, feed, seed, weed, heed and feed again.

Need
You want and need someone to trust. Recognize that only God can fill the God-shaped empty space inside you. Once you let Him fill that emptiness, He'll add the other things that you need. In Matthew 6:33 we read, "Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (NIV).

Feed
As a tree planted by a stream draws water to live, you can draw constant strength and nourishment from God (Psalm 1:3). We seldom receive the gift of audibly hearing God's voice, but God has given us a guide—the Bible. Read a few verses each day and draw on the wisdom of those truths.

Seed
Trust does not hatch full-grown. Just as an acorn seed grows into an oak tree, trust grows daily too. At first it's flimsy, but eventually it's strong enough to weather storms.

To keep your seeds of trust growing:
1. Notice God's faithfulness. Throughout the days, years and generations before today God has shown that He is trustworthy. He has kept his promises--promises to be with His people when tough times come, promises to intervene in history to show His power.
2. Notice the uniqueness of God. Only God came to earth as Jesus Christ so that you can know Jesus. Only Jesus Christ rose from death never to die again. Only God can raise you from death and take you to heaven where you will never die again.
3. Notice God's personal care for you. Perhaps He has given you a parent who listens, understands and gives you advice you can use. Maybe you have a friend who really cares about what happens to you and listens with rapt attention. Maybe you have found a way to do math. These are God's gifts to you. The Bible describes these gifts: "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like the shifting shadows" (James 1:17, NIV).
4. Focus on the good. There are happy times and sad times in every day. If you focus on the good rather than whine about the bad, you'll find that you notice God's gifts to you.

Weed
Discover the difference between what God sends and what God allows to happen. Many people have trouble trusting God because a parent has died or a friend has committed suicide. These hard times are effects of this imperfect world, not vengeance sent from God. The Bible says, "God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5, NIV). God grieves along with you when sad things happen. He does not take away those whom you love.

Heed
As you FEED on God's Word and WEED truth from fakery, live the truth. Do as the Bible says. You won't understand everything right away, but go ahead and do what you already understand. For example, the Bible says to love others as you love yourself (Matthew 22:39). Do you want to be listened to? Then listen to your friends and parents. Do you want to be taken seriously? Then take your friends and your parents seriously.

Feed Again
The better you know God, the easier you'll find it to trust and obey Him. And the more you'll sense how deeply God cherishes you. So learn more about God each day. Grow closer to the awesome God who treasures you beyond your wildest dreams. You can trust Him.
