Clearsailing:

I don't know about the window side but this statement is false:

"Tunes doesn't give me any control over how it creates filenames (a real pet peeve of mine)

One can turn off the automatic naming feature from iTunes preference.

As for 5.1 surround, I don't think any music that really matters are encoded in 5.1 surround. If I want music in surround mode, I can always set my receiver to simulate various surround environments. Dolby Studio pretty much has cornered the market for surround sound and if any music ever needs to be in 5.1 surround, you will find it in AAC.

I think this guy only has a problem with fairplay. Its true that the only player compatible with fairplay is the iPod but it doesn't give him the right to slam AAC. If I were him, I'd just encode in MP3 and he'd be compatible with all players. But no, this guy has to care about the fact that music players manufacturers have to pay more to Thompson for MP3 than they would to MS for WMA. Is he being a little too rightous?

I think the devil just show his tail when he said this:

"Remember, back in the early days of the Web, when 95% of the world used Netscape? Then, just as the Internet was getting big, Microsoft came out with a faster, more feature-rich browser and gave it away for free (not that anyone actually paid to download Netscape). Now Internet Explorer is by far the most prevalent browser -- with hardly any significant competition despite all the superior features available in products like Mozilla.

That's what MS wants everone to think.
