The holy grail of biofuel production is finding a feedstock that actually produces more energy than it requires to create.

That's an impossibility. The ancient impossible dream of a perpetuum mobile. Any high school student also knows why. It would be in violation of the law of Conservation of Energy, which states that energy can never be created or destroyed, and is therefore impossible.
