I know this will make me less than popular with you, but since i was in the Guard (1970-1976) maybe I can explain a little about the workings. Most Guard members are required to attend for duty on one pre-determined weekend per month and for two full weeks during the summer. Fly Boys, out of necessity, are on a far different schedule. (at least in my unit) There requirement is to keep their rating and skills current by flying a certain number of hours per month. Because there were, during that time period, never enough aircraft to go around, some would fly Mondays, some Tuesdays, some Wednesdays and so on. There just was no way to have them all there during the same time period and accomplish all that needed to be done.
There was NEVER, EVER, EVER, any requirement to report in to anyone at anytime. Just show your log book when it came pay time. And it would be near impossible to enter a false log. Each aircraft was tracked and all engine time logged. besides, I never once ran into a Pilot that didn't log more time than required, about half the time without pay. Pilots are as addicted to the air as many of us are to PCBM.
