Sricket, they dont "have to" do anything. As a matter of fact they dont have to buy anymore players if they dont want to. My take from reading todays pr and last weeks release from aps is that they are phasing in the digeplayers and are developing methods of handling the logistics.
Fwiw I think that down the road all repairs, refurbishments etc. will be handled "in house" so to speak. I think Rockwell Collins is helping out on an interim basis. I dont see them staying involved with the project unless they choose to market the player themselves. I also dont believe that aps will want to continue to pay a company like RC over the long haul.
Gradually adding flights that have the player available will allow them to develop efficient methods for providing the player to passengers. Dont forget that the players will probably be evolving over time as well/
