Matt,

I've a little experience with networks, run several meters of cat5 cable in my time. One thing I found to greatly relieve the stress involved in troubleshooting intermittent server glitches is to shed the Nikes, pull on my favorite Tony Lamas and properly reboot (kick) the bitch. Doesn't make the server "happy", but does relieve some stress.
