They become treasury stocks. Companies can either retire them or put them back into the market by way of giving it to employees, vendors, etc. as bonuses, options, etc. or sell them back directly. Regarding the last option of selling them back into the market, I'm not 100% that they can do this, but they would have to be very careful since they can easily be accused of manipulating their stock.
