Hmm, I would like to learn more about the technical reasons for this, but I'll accept the premises on the combined authority of Andi Kleen and Agner.

However I think that doesn't really change the outcome of this instruction set game. With x86-64, AMD solved a huge problem, something tangible and imminent, in a way that Intel simply wasn't willing to (yet).

With SSE5 this is hardly the case. Things like FMAC are nice to have, but they're not fundamental new capabilities, just more efficient ways to handle existing scenarios. For some people that might be just what they need, but I really doubt AMD has enough leverage to force Intel to adopt their instructions this time.
