I am getting the niacin in the form of a prescription drug Niaspan.* My doctor approves and has commented on how successful the modification of my lipid profile has been. He also doubts that others would be as compliant or determined to get the result.
As I understand this, there have been problems with time released niacin (think it was liver tox) and that the Veterans Administration pulled the time released version off its formulary. Immediate release and Niaspan do not have the tox problem though I doubt many people could tolerate 2g of immediate release.
