Rapid point-of-care HIV testing for pregnant women in labor offers the last window of opportunity to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT). Antenatal care (ANC) is not widely accessible to rural Indians, thus many rural women present for delivery without any prior care. Many fail to get tested for HIV due to a lack a regular supply of rapid test kits or due to the lack 24-hour laboratory testing and counseling services, thus miss availing PMTCT interventions. We investigated the impact of introducing 24-hour voluntary oral rapid HIV testing and counseling session at a delivery ward in rural India. The cross sectional component of the study is over, and the follow up will continue upto the end of 2007. This study will be the first of its kind in India.
