Gravel pits tend to fill up with water after they're abandonned. I have this idea about how to make money with them: Put a bunch of old stuff on the bottom. Cars, construction equipment, perhaps on old airplane - it doesn't really matter what it is. Then advertise it as a scuba diving destination and charge admission.
Scuba fanatics will travel great distances and spend lots of money to look at stuff under water that nobody would ever look twice at on dry land. Like a rusted out old school bus...
