It's more comedy/fantasy than Sci-fi. I love Sci-fi, too, and have probably read everything Asimov ever wrote, which is quite an accomplishment. He was like Steven King in that if he tripped and fell onto a typewriter, it'd accidentally spit out a novel.
Anyway, the Myth Adventures. There're 12 books in the series and most of them are available as 2-book paperbacks. You'll want to read them in chronological order. The first two are Another Fine Myth and Myth Conceptions.
Edit: My wife recently ordered the Piers Anthony "Xanth" series for me, which I'm looking forward to getting. Getting into reading at night has really made me a more productive programmer than when I'm programming day and night.
