As pointed out in the PR, WRAIR had to identify and develop the Dengue ligand. Obviously, they want to test the generic Viricide-HP and the more specific Dengue targeting viricide simultaneously. The idea is to see how efficacy is changed when a targeting ligand is attached. My guess is that they will be testing simultaneously at least 3 versions of Viricide: Viricide-HP, Viricide-HP tweaked for Dengue, and Dengue specific DengueCide (DengueCide-HP?).
Keep in mind also that the drug needs to be effective against all four types of Dengue, and ideally that would be one DengueCide that targets all four. But, what if they need four different versions of each? Well, that might mean having to mix a cocktail of DengueCides; however, currently researchers have evidence that a targeting ligand for one type of virus will work against the entire family. So, one Dengue specific ligand should work against not only all four dengues but all other Flavoviruses, including West Nile Virus, Japanese Encephilitis, and Yellow Fever.
