Robots Heading to Nevada

Robots aren't just going to Iraq, a number of production-ready vehicles will also soon be patrolling an army depot in Nevada, according to Defense Daily (subscription only).

Mdars_many The Army and General Dynamics [GD] are working to agree on a contract that would launch production of a first-of-its-kind semi-autonomous robotic security system, industry officials said Wednesday at the Force Protection Equipment Demonstration (FPED) VI in Stafford, Va.

The first Mobile Detection Assessment Response System (MDARS) will use about six vehicles to patrol Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada, which primarily stores ammunition.

The contract should be signed in the next several months and, depending on the number of future sites selected, could call for production of 24 to 30 robots, said Jay Rosenblum, director for business development at General Dynamics Robotic Systems.

MDARS vehicles are equipped with a host of sensors that help the robots navigate a course, avoid obstacles, detect intruders and check locks. Humans can remotely operate the vehicles and receive real-time video shot by the robot.

There's no indication the robots will be armed, but the SPAWAR Systems Center in San Diego has tested nonlethal weapons on the MDARS.
