We sold our place in CT last year in anticipation of this slowdown, and are renting, thank you. We chose to be in White Plains, which is 25 mins outside of NY, because I still wanted to have a car, without paying an additional $600/$1000 a month for a parking garage.
Given the nature of this real estate bubble, I have no intention of buying again until the dust settles. I've seen this mess happen before in 1987/1990, and I know what happened to real estate back then. It took three-four years for the prices to bottom out.
I suspect this time the correction will be more severe. The last thing in the world we need is to be anchored to a mortgage, in case we wanted to relocate to London or some other destination.
