Japan's benchmark index posted its biggest one-day drop in more than seven years, plunging 874.81 points, or 5.4%, to close at 15273.68, with a sharp drop in the dollar against the yen hurting exporters. Hong Kong plummeted 6% in late trading, South Korean shares finished down 3.2% and markets in India, Indonesia and Singapore were all trading sharply lower, as the effects of the U.S. housing-loan crisis continued to ripple through Asia.
