Again, I believe you are seriously misreading the polls. I do not know what poll you get your number from or its methodology, but I think I can safely say with full confidence that 76% of the american people are not in favor of completely pulling out of Iraq today. Nor tomorrow. Nor next week or next month.

What they want is an end to that portion of the war, an end to the endless expenses, and most of all an end to our casualties, and they want to accomplish that as soon as possible. But they want it done in a reasonable manner, not just a withdrawal at any cost on an arbitrary date without at least making an honest effort to bring an end to the violence over there.

I think the American people (including myself) believe that the war has been badly mismanaged, and they are angry at that. I think most would agree that Bush made the same mistakes made in VietNam, micro-managing the war from Washington with an eye on the political considerations rather than letting aggressive commanders in the field make the decisions based solely on the situation on the ground. Bush talked a good game at first but did not leave the troops in place in sufficient numbers to get the job done, and did not recognize and prepare for the potential of sectarian violence, something that should have been obvious.

The "surge" may be a case of too little too late. I am not convinced either way on that. I think it is clear that the effort should have begun a long time ago, and with even more troops. Now, with the liberal carping encouraging the terrorists that they are winning and all they need to do is keep the pressure up for a little while longer, it very well may be, as I said, a case of too little, too late. I hope not.
