The Earth has an electronic charge, by way of the magnetosphere.
So any bodies traveling through space. They travel through charged plasma like a balloon rubbing on felt.
In most cases, theses bodies are similarly charged, causing a repellant action between them.
However anything that passes through our magnetosphere ends up having an airburst effect rather than a direct strike impact. The charge between the two bodies literally explodes the smaller entity BEFORE impact thus creating a basically empty crater.
That's why most meteor craters are empty, while shattered shards are found miles from the actual point of "impact".
