I signed up for Graboid's free three day trial.

The first thing I notice is that they have a lot of great movies, many of them only a year or two old.

They use the windows media player as their client software, which I had to download.

All in all, the registration and download process of the client software was very easy and glitch free. I’m impressed.

I selected the movie Lethal Weapon II. Buffering begins and it did not seem to take any longer than Reeltime’s buffering delay.

Then the movie starts. There is a car chase scene in which Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are chasing bad guys, very exciting stuff.

The movie was playing full-screen from the get-go. And the color and picture clarity were flawless. I am getting worried. But wait, where is the sound? I have no sound.

I start fiddling with the volume knobs on my computer's speakers and with the controls in the computers control panel. And then the picture freezes and a pop-up window informs me that my broadband connection may be too slow to stream this movie. It recommends that I download the film and watch it later.

I wait it out to see if it only requires one good buffer to get the movie rolling again. The movie starts playing. Great color, great DVD-looking clarity, no sound.

Even without the sound I get caught up in the movie, and for about 5 minutes I am fasinated by one of the action scenes. And then it freezes again, and I watch as it buffers another 5 minute segment.

I watch another 5-minute segment to see how the scene ends, but then the action stops once more and it buffers again.

Forget it! I turn it off.

We have nothing to fear from Graboid as a competitor.
