Already my laptop needs would be best satisfied by a scaled up PDA

That'd be a Jornada 820 or a Psion netBook. Ok, their screens are small by laptop standards, but they are both really nice machines. Ok, the netBook is an EPOC machine and that may not be your cup of chai. But I've used both and I like them a lot.

Both had/have the same problem as the thin clients. Their production numbers aren't very high so they cost as much as a laptop with more features. As a result, they are specialized devices and prices to match. Which means they can't get enough volume to drive down the prices, etc...
