I did a lot of research on the Le Scipion back when it was first announced. I posted several links on the dpbm blog. Too tired tonight to go through my notes, but I do remember that there were two accounts of what happened to the Le Scipion.

First, was the British boarded and claimed the ship, took it back to England and commissioned the ship as British and re named it.

Second, The Le Scipion won the battle and smashed into the rocks the next day or a couple of days later.

How many Navy boys on the Blog? My question being, if you were out to sea and got paid, what in the hell would you do with it, gamble it away with the other sailors, spend what you could at port, if there was a port, if they did stop. Maybe you would leave your pay in the safe until you reached home port, maybe they had not stopped at a port in months so maybe the payroll is larger. If you did have your pay in the bunk area, and you had to get off the ship fast you might not have grabbed all that gold and silver. I know there are one heck of a lot of maybes in that paragraph, but I think they are valid maybes.

I have quite a large selection of notes, and copies of the old blog on file backed up on the good ol Maxtore 250 gig auto backup system.

Rock out with your Stock out. :)>
