How could they walk away scot free? I mean the bank has most likely a no down 100% loan on the house, which house is now some 20% below the value of the loan. I mean, something has to give here. So scot free is not even an option IMO. The best the homeowners can do is hand over the house to the bank rather than also have to come up with the additional 20% money, right? Their credit will take a hit but the can rebuild that over time. To me, that would be the "scot free scenario. And for the banks the lesson should be, "never ever ever loan money without a down payment stupid".
