Went to get some groceries this morning. Get to the cashier and start loading stuff on to the belt. This old guy and his wife come up behind me, next in line. All he has is a baguette (bread), so I tell him he can go ahead of me. He says no, that's fine, I'm retired, I have lots of time.

I told him I'm younger than you, I have more time, and it's the first nice day in a long time, you should take your bread and enjoy it while there is time.

So he goes ahead of me at my insistance, his wife come back from wherever she had wondered off to during the conversation, and starts bitching at the guy for telling me to let him in front of me. He tells his wife that it was in fact me that insisted he go ahead of me. Wife turns to me with a questioning look and I said, that's not true, he was very impolite and insisted he go first with the bread because us young people have more time left in the world than he does.

Both man and wife's jaw dropped and I could see a look of fury coming over the wife. Then I started laughing. Said no, it happened just as he said, I insisted he go ahead of me, and he never asked anything.

I bet they'll tell the story to their children, over and over. At least something happened in their lives today other than simply going to the supermarket to buy a baguette.....
