That's easy, electronic markers. The MM's can continuously churn stock they don't own by "robbing from Peter to pay Paul". They simply borrow against something they don't have to fill the orders, much like a credit card or mortgage works today. The problem for them is, once real value enters the picture and more buyers move in, they can't borrow anymore, this is where the squeeze comes in.
