techhunter: I did not use the XP3 to convert .wav to .mp3, though I did use the bundled MusicMatch software (which was an upgrade from the version native to my Dell PC) for that part of the task. It rips (is that the right term?) a CD like Rubber Soul from the commercial disc to .mp3 files on the PC in less than two minutes (an estimate from memory). Moving the .mp3 files from PC to XP3 took only a fraction (.25 or .33?) of that time. I think the average CD can be "XP3d" in under five minutes.

I realize that you can compress a lot of music CDs into .mp3 files on one blank CD. But can you play those songs without a PC?
