chipguy,

don't consider AMD's situation dire, for several reasons.

First, computing OEMs would be loath to be locked into a monopoly environment where Intel called all the shots. As a result, continued patronage of AMD is virtually guaranteed..

<sarcasm on>Sure it is.<sarcasm off>

The question is: "at what price?" The assumption here is that the OEM's somehow operate under a communist economy and therefore they need not compete since everyone is a winner and no one is a loser. WRONG! The natural forces of competitive economics will dictate what they will do. In my opinion, the idea of keeping AMD alive, relative to beating your competitor, is miniscule in the minds of OEM's. There is a cost. There are winners and losers. There is competition. The fact that Hector spouts this garbage is just another indication that there is not much more they can offer the investor community.

"Customers want us to succeed. Large OEMs, distributors, decision makers and users of PCs and other digital technologies around the world agree that competition in the processor industry is good and healthy for our industry," Ruiz said.

Of course competition is good. And Hector assures us that because AMD can not hold up its end of the competition, everyone will rally (and pay!) to support AMD. Yea right. <g>

Users of PC's (barring the obvious exceptions) could care less about the competitive landscape of the CPU industry. But Ruiz has polled us all, so it must be true. <g>

IMHO
