tuscan- the board here didn't work (for the masses) before b/c the monitors would not allow OT posts, or simple "how ya doin?s". Let's face it , most posters want that more than deep discourse and links. imo there is no optimal solution, message board wise, except to maintain a board for the serious core and not worry about the rest. Why I have gone the way I have. My site will have a (obviously moderated) forum feature, but that can never have the realtime appeal of a MB.
I would like to see this board resurrected something like the DCUT board here, with some visual and link interest. Considering the quality of some of the good boards here, i-Hub would be my first choice.
