I don't know what operating system you are running but I have Win98 and to check my resources I got to Start, Assecories, System Tools, System Information - this is where it will tell you what % your resources are at. When you first boot the computer without running any of your programs your resourse % will be much higher than after you run your programs. You can check them but it sounds to me that your resources are low. By taking out some items in your start up that you don't need it may help - it did for me!
