US And Russia Pave Way For Nuclear Energy Cooperation
6 Jul (NucNet): The US and Russia intend to “play an active role” in making nuclear energy available to a wide range of states, especially developing countries, according to a declaration signed on 3 July 2007 by US president George Bush and Russian president Vladimir Putin.

The two nations have agreed in principal to work together in an effort to supply modern and more proliferation resistant nuclear energy reactors and research reactors. They said they would do this provided the common goal of prevention of proliferation of nuclear weapons is achieved.

The declaration also allows the two nations to exchange nuclear materials and equipment. The head of Russia’s Federal Atomic Energy Agency (Rosatom), Sergei Kiriyenko, said up until now nuclear fuel and equipment has been exchanged through mediators and this had been a “serious obstacle” to supplies to third countries.

Mr Kiriyenko said: “Russia is the biggest supplier of nuclear fuel and services in the world. We want to expand our presence in this market and need direct ways for doing it.” He said the US is the biggest user of nuclear energy and Russia wants such markets to be open.

The legislatures of the two countries have 90 days in which to consider and ratify the declaration, said the Rosatom statement.
