If you take a look at the chip pictures in these Athlon64 reviews,

http://www.techreport.com/reviews/2004q1/athlon64-3400/index.x?pg=1
http://www.hothardware.com/reviews/images/a64_3400+/cpu_front.htm

you can see that both of these chips were made during week 37 of 2003 (second code in the middle line starting with "0337"), which would mean sometime around August. This means that, more than one month before the official launch of Athlon64, AMD already had parts clocking at 2.2Ghz, packaged for 754 pins. This is almost five months before launching the parts officially.

Most of the reviews out there mention that these are C0-stepping cores. Given the time passed, there should already be a tweaked C1 stepping somewhere, which should allow AMD to reach 2.4Ghz (3700+ rating) or even 2.6Ghz (3900/4000+ rating?) at 130nm in high-volume quantities. Should be enough to counter an eventual 3.6Ghz Prescott while 90nm cores arrive.
