Almost overlooked ... (!!!)

Am I the only one who was left wondering how DID Apple manage to get Dual 2.0 Ghz G5s into a 1U casing for the Xserve without melting the whole thing down?

Answer: the new G5s are here! These suckers are manufactured on the new 0.09µ process -- they are 40% smaller than the G5 chips in the Powermacs introduced this fall, and that means they burn close to 40% less power and produce 40% less heat. So THAT's how they got the heat down!!

For confirmation and more details, go to this page and click on "Xserve G5 Tech Overview"
http://www.apple.com/g5processor/

Guess what else this means?!! It means we are now cleared for takeoff on much faster CPUs for the Powermacs. I think Dual 2.0 Ghz is about all they could manage to stuff in that tiny 1U casing because of heat concerns. But at the 0.09µ process, they should be getting yields up to 2.6 Ghz with strong supplies at 2.4 Ghz, and they will be no problem at all for the G5 case design to cool. So we should see speed-bumped G5s by sometime in February -- possibly coinciding with MacWorld Tokyo. It's definitely possible that we see 2.6 Ghz in February, 2.8 Ghz by May and then the full 3.0 Ghz by September.

WOW. This is HUGE news, and it snuck right under the radar!
