The "deep brain simulation" mentioned in the article involves placing electrodes in the brain and keeping them there, which is pretty invasive too but works quite well for some Parkinson's patients.

PD may be a good target for gene therapy because a relatively small portion of the brain is involved, so you don't have to worry about slow diffusion rates keeping the viral vector from carrying the gene where it needs to go.

Still, this is a small trial run by a tiny company. It's too early to tell if it works well or if the company can find the money to run larger trials.
