Striking similarities true, I once compared it to the less elaborate shell game. But the end result of course being the same.

However with the names involved and relatively accessible structure to those people. It would be a far stretch to believe it is intentional deceit. They could of course fail but I do believe it would be more potential mis management vs illegal dealings.
