If there is no neutral between dark and light what would you call "dim"? As in "dim your lights".

As an adjective, I would call "dim" a condition of less than full or normal lighting. As a verb, I would say that dim is to reduce the intensity of lighting Neither is neutral. If there were such a thing as "neutral lighting," what would it be? Somewhere between the absolute light at the heart of the sun and the absolute lack of light at in the vacuum of a black hole? Nope. There is either light, or varying degrees of less light. Same applies to heat. Cranking up the AC does not add cold, it removes heat.

If there were a neutral state between light and dark, hot and cold, then surely it would be capable of being quantified in either lumens or degrees. To my knowledge, and aside from qualitative descriptions used by interior designers and the like, this has never been done.
