I don't short individual stocks. I probably could and probably would make money, but I just don't do it.
Shorting an index is a market play, but you can't get killed shorting an index because it won't move huge percentages in a short time.
But, by shorting a stock you CAN get killed. There is no limit to what your losses could be. Additionally, since the historical trend on the average stock is UP, you are fighting the historical tape when you short.
As I've said before, just because you aren't long does NOT equate to being short. Shorting has a lot more risk associated with it - especially on individual stocks.
