They could be willing to talk settlement for another reason, too:
As long as Rufus is unwilling or unable to hire an attorney, he'll be representing himself. I don't care how smart you are, when you hit the courtroom, you're going to be - in varying degrees - inept at your defense.

Because of that, he could conceivably be able to drag this trial out for years. If he loses, he could even possibly appeal, based on incompetent counsel.

So regardless of the presence or absence of proof, and how solid their case is, they may be willing to just head the whole thing off at the pass.
