i know pruisner. misfolded proteins have been reported to cause cascades of other misfolded proteins.
It is unclear how best to detect them but pruisner has a decent test. the sensitivity still is not best.
the problems are:
does the concept of chain reactions from misfolded proteins extend to other disease states and conditions and not just prion disease of the CNS. "aging" spots in histology have been known for over 100 years. are there other prion like diseases? the answer is a tentative yes in that protein misfolding does cause other disease, but not a catastrophe effect
and do CNS derived prions travel through the blood brain barrier to other organs?
it all depends on whether brain lymphatics can pass the protein and no body seems to know. if it can get into the lymphatic system, it obviosly can get anywhere.
If it can get to the peripheral nerve system, it is obviously found in the peripheral nerves in muscle meats
But know one knows what the dose of prion containing material ingested orally is necessary to cause disease. there is no reason why the digestive tract antibody system would not make an antibody to it and stop it cold if it did not flood the system
On the other hand, the only reason we have this problem is the expressed meat industry and the animal rendering industry. the greed involved to extract the last 1% of profit from a cow is sickening. No expressed meat: a lot safer food. no rendering of whole animals and refeeding: a lot safer feeding supply
Meanwhile over that last five years, small private beef production farms using organic feeds and no bone meal additives have sprung up. You can buy safe meat and have it delivered to your door if you buy quarters or halves. it costs twice as much.
meanwhile dont use bone meal in your garden or "organic fertilizers" that contain them. Why handle and inhale prions?
